Oblivion disco, touring with Metronomy and neighbourhood arson – it’s Extended Play 014 with NZCA Lines!
NZCA Lines is the electro pop offspring of songwriter Michael Lovett. Raised in Totes, Devon, Michael has – in contrast, to the feet-in-the-sand folksiness of his contemporaries – carved a niche for himself producing Sebastien Tellier-style synth sublimity with a sci-fi twist.
"the idea for the album was that we have survived, but there's been no alien contact, we have not colonised the stars... This is kind of it"
Having grown up alongside a talented bunch that included Ben Howard, Ryan Keen, Metronomy frontman Joe Mount and elder brother (and one-time Metronomy member) Gabriel Stebbing, Lovett found his own direction after a dalliance with a Mini Moog. 2012 single Okinawa Channels was the result, soon followed by debut album NZCA/Lines.
This year he returned with a new NZCA Lines line-up that included Charlotte Hatherley (Ash, Bat For Lashes) and Hot Chip percussionist Sarah Jones. The resulting album, Infinite Summer, is a must-listen record that conveys an ambitious apocalyptic sci-fi concept in four minute floor-fillers.
Matt sat down with Michael to discuss his involvement in Devon’s musical melting pot, childhood hijinks and soundtracking humanity’s last days on earth… Apocalypse POW!
NZCA Lines new album Infinite Summer is out now on Memphis Industries.
